Smith, Alfred Glenn

Beloved Husband, Father and Grandpa

Master Gardener and Lover of Music

Age 84, passed away peacefully December 20, 2010, surrounded by those who loved and cared for him. Al was born and raised in White Bear Lake. He was a three sport athlete in high school and carried a love of all sports with him throughout his life. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering after serving his country in the Navy. Two of the best decisions he ever made were marrying Joan Fifield in 1948 and accepting a job working at 3M. He was a dedicated father, forever encouraging his children to make the most of their lives. Throughout his 39 year career at 3M, Al worked with both lab and marketing groups. He was admired by many as a leader, forever faithful to those who worked with him, and as an innovative problem solver. Al loved music and was active as a choir member, soloist, and choral director at First Presbyterian Church in White Bear Lake. Even up to his last year, Al sang with the Silver Harmony Singers, entertaining different groups around the east metro. Al was also a featured performer in 37 straight Lions Club shows in White Bear Lake.

Al is survived by Joan, his wife of 62 years, daughters Deb Kaczorek (Kevin) and Nan Geske, son Thomas (Julie) and seven grandchildren: John and Mary Kaczorek, Megan and Emi Smith, and Liz (Geske) Housholder, Adrianne and Tom Geske. Al was preceded in death by his parents Cleo and Viola, brother Bob, and granddaughter Janna.

A memorial service for Al will be held at First Presbyterian Church of White Bear Lake on Tuesday, December 28 at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior at the church. There will also be a visitation from 4:00 - 7:00 pm Monday evening, December 27, at Bradshaw Funeral Home, 2800 Curve Crest Boulevard, Stillwater, MN.

Special thanks to all the staff at The Gables at Boutwell's Landing for the loving care they gave to Al. The family requests that memorials be directed to the music ministry at First Presbyterian Church in White Bear Lake or to the donor's choice.
