Amanda Dahlke

April 12, 1903 — April 13, 2003

On Palm Sunday, April 13, 2003, the angels rejoiced because Amanda Theresa Radke left her earthly home at the Greeley Healthcare Center in Stillwater, MN. to join her host of friends and relatives in her eternal home with her Savior. Her devotion to her Lord Jesus Christ was the focal point of her life. Her unmeasurable love for her children, grandchildren, family and friends was evident throughout her life.

Amanda was born on the Radke family homestead in the town of Somerset on Palm Sunday, April 12, 1903 to Fred and Martha Kolbe Radke.

Here she spent her childhood with her parents and five siblings; Henry, Arthur, Ernest, Marie (Martin) Goetschl and Lena Frankwick, her sister that survives her.

She attended the Bass Lake School, later known as Four Corners. Here she not only got her basic education, but her ability to speak English as her second language. It was at this school, at an old-fashioned basket social that she had her first date with the love of her life, Charles Dahlke. They had a previous brief encounter when she was nine and he was nineteen. She was making "mud cakes" and he had come to the farm to buy a horse from her father. From that day on, they both knew that someday they would marry. They were married November 5, 1925 by their beloved pastor, Rev. J.W. Peiper at the Salem Lutheran Parsonage in Stillwater.

They farmed with Charlie's parents, Michael and Mary Dahlke on their 1894 homestead on Trout Brook Road. Much of the farm now is Willow River State Park. Their home became a haven for the sick, the homeless and the needy. No one was ever turned away. In 1954, they retired from farming and built a home on Highway E, two miles east of Houlton. Amanda was now free to garden and bake her famous bread and cookies for her family and friends.

She was able to remain in her home until she was ninety-five hears old when failing health forced her to move to Croixdale in Bayport, MN. She often said she thought she had gone to heaven because she never had to fix a meal or clean again. She was able to stay at Croixdale two years and then had to transfer to the Greeley Healthcare Center where she was given care with respect and dignity by their staff and her devoted caretaker, her daughter Lucille.

Amanda was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie; three brothers; one sister; and her son-in-law, Victor Prescott.

Amanda is survived by three children, Lucille Prescott of Houlton, WI, Leona (Don) Ubbelohde of Colfax, WI and Elton (JoAnn) Dalke of Shoreview MN; twelve grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; twelve great-great-grandchildren; sister, Lena Frankwick and by many other relatives and friends.
