Merwyn.Bernard Milton Lamb was born in the small town of Woodward, Iowa in 1931 during the height of the Great Depression. A couple of years later, his family moved to Mason City where he attended school and spent many summers as a young child at his uncle's farm in Britt, Iowa. In the early 1940's Bernie's family moved to St. Paul where he attended Humboldt High School and established several lifelong friendships.
After high school, Bernie enrolled in Hamline University to study math and science. He was also captain of the Hamline tennis team. During summers he worked as a chef on the Great Northern Railroad where he mainly traveled the route from Chicago to Seattle and developed a passion for cooking. College was interrupted by his service in the Army during the Korean War. Bernie spent two years in Army camps in California and Washington.
After the war, Bernie finished college at Hamline and earned a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Physics. He immediately went to work for Fairbanks Morse as a sales engineer. In 1954, he met his wife, Beverly from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, through a blind date. They were married in 1956 and proceeded to have four sons, Tom, Peter, Charlie and Rich. Bernie worked for several companies before starting his own firm Allied Equipment Sales in 1981, where he continued to work until this year. He was well known throughout the country for his expertise in agricultural weighing systems and test weights.
Through his work and travels one thing was a constant. If you were looking for a good restaurant-name the city and Bernie would give you suggestions on where to go for a fine dinner.
Forty-six years ago, Bernie and Bev purchased a cabin on Lac Courte Oreilles Lake, near Hayward, Wisconsin. He had a flair for architecture and designed several additions to this home away from home. Bernie loved the cabin and enjoyed numerous sunsets over the lake.
