HASSETT, CHARLES W.
Age 74, St. Paul, MN
Died May 8, 2013 after a very long illness.

Preceded in death by parents, Myron (MD), Hildegard (RN) Hassett, and brother Myron F. Survived by two daughters whom he loved very much, Natasha (Cody Bourdot) and Alarica; former wife, NaAry Digris; many caring nephews and nieces; sister, Hildegarde Petsuch; sister-in-law, Sue Hassett; and cousins.

Charles was an extremely intelligent person, very articulate. He graduated from Cretin High School, St. Paul, in the top 5% of a class of 191 and later received his BA (cum laude) from the University of Minnesota where he had a triple major in German, Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies, and minors in Spanish and Botany. He then went on to study at the American University in Cairo, Egypt, where he received his MA in Medieval Islamic History.

Although he received two scholarships to further his studies beyond his Masters degree, he decided that he did not care to teach and started his own business. After having traveled to several more countries, he settled back in Minneapolis and trained himself in the skills of carpentry, plumbing and electrical work, and became a self-employed handyman. (In but one example of his offbeat and often offensive sense of humor, he referred to himself as "Hausmeister" and proudly passed out business cards that read "Old World Quality... Third World Prices".)

Charles also served in the U.S. Army Reserve for eight years from where he received an Honorable Discharge. For six months, he was in active duty under the Reserve Forces Act, and for his Reserve service time that he spent with the 103rd Division Army Band at Fort Snelling, MN, he played the French horn for 3.5 years and remained on Call-Up status for 4 years. A complex person with myriad varied interests, Charles also studied ballet and was a prolific gardener, a voracious reader, an amateur geologist, an interested anthropologist, a talented chef, and a classical music fanatic. He will be sorely missed by his loved ones.

An open house reception in his memory will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 starting at 2 pm at the home of Angi & Carlos Aguirre.
