Wilkins, Craig Gordon

Age 66

Craig Wilkins' gentle soul left us during his sleep early Sunday morning, January 25, 2008. Despite heroic efforts to revive his heart, he never regained consciousness. Craig's body died the night of January 27, 2009 in HCMC with his wife, Candace Lorraine Barrick, and their son, Ethan Joseph Barrick Wilkins, at his side shortly after they and close friends said goodbye to him in word and music. The world has lost a loving husband, father and friend, as well as a gifted storyteller, writer, cook and humorist. Craig radiated humor, intelligence and a sense of wonder. He grew up in Riverside, New Jersey, the only child of Joe and Edna Wilkins. He enlisted in the Air Force at 17, serving 4 years as Airman First Class. After his honorable discharge, Craig moved to Minnesota to attend Lea College in Albert Lea. He transferred to St. Cloud State University where he received a degree in journalism in 1971. He wrote for The College Chronicle and co-founded a literary journal, Sticks and Stones. After graduation, he covered municipal and county affairs for 9 years for the St. Cloud Daily Times. He moved to the Twin Cities, where he wrote for The Spokesman and other publications before accepting a position as writer and editor for Minnesota Department of Transportation (MN/DOT) in 1980. He married Candace Barrick in an outdoor wedding on her parents' farm near Darwin, MN in 1984. Their son Ethan was born in 1986. Craig was a member of the Men's Center, for which he co-edited the Men's Survival Resource Book. He was active in his community, wrote for the Longfellow Messenger newspaper and was a proud member of First Universalist Church. A humble man, Craig probably never realized how many lives he affected and how deeply people loved him. We will surely miss him and keep his memory with us always. Craig leaves a special piece of himself behind in Ethan who carries the same loving spirit. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 7th at First Universalist Church, 3400 Dupont Avenue South, Minneapolis. There will be a viewing in the Cummins Room at 4 p.m., with a memorial service at 5:30 and a light meal following. In lieu of flowers, the family invites memorials in Craig's honor to Second Harvest Heartland, 1140 Gervais Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55109-2020; 651-209-7950, www.2harvest.org. Messages can be left at www.bradshawfuneral.com
