Frances Piper

Frances Pauline (Mapes) Piper A�??FranA�?? was born on June 14, 1914 at home in Earlham, Iowa to Lois and Festus Mapes. Fran had an older sister, Irene and a younger sister, Ruth. She spent her childhood living and working on the family farm.

Fran graduated from Earlham High School and moved to Des Moines, where she worked as a housekeeper and nanny. During World War II Fran worked at an ordinance plant testing ammunition.

Fran was married to Kenneth Piper in 1945. To this union were born Alise and Shirley. Ken died in 1964.

Fran was a member of the West Des Moines United Methodist Church, ABWA and the 25 year club at the Iowa Des Moines Nation Bank A�?? now Wells Fargo.

Fran is survived by her daughters, Alisa (Larry) Cumpston and Shirley (John) Rosebery; her three grandchildren, Kirk (Yolanda) Cumpston, Krissa Cumpston and Annamarie (Jason) Adkins; her 7 great grandchildren, Juan Cumpston, Erik Cumpston, Jaden Cumpston, Dominic Adkins, Xavier Adkins, Mary Frances Adkins and Josephine Adkins. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Carl Gilman and nieces and nephews, Mille & Kit McDowall, Craig and Stephanie Gilman, Cary and Rochelle Gilman, JoAn Baker, Lynn Jennison and January Jaqua.

Fran was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth and sisters, Irene Gilman and Ruth Gilman.

Service will be held Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 2:00PM at West Des Moines United Methodist Church, 720 Grand Avenue, West Des Moines. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Resthaven Cemetery, West Des Moines.
