Age 91. Born November 3, 1915; died August 22, 2007, surrounded by family and listening to Methodist hymns.
At age 16, Grace Fish traveled on a freight train to college during the Great Depression wearing cardboard in her shoes. She graduated from the University of Illinois, where she was asked to be one of the first women cheerleaders. After college, she taught phy ed and other subjects, meeting a thoughtful and handsome physics teacher, Raymond Anderson. They wed in 1939, were married almost 49 years, and raised Roger, Karin, Chuck and Sue. Our grief is lessened by knowing she joins her beloved Ray.
Nana helped raise most of her grandchildren for at least part of their childhood while one of their parents attended graduate school or worked. Nana was their number one fan, in the stands and in life. Words cannot do justice to the role she played in her family?s lives. We also remember her as a #1 Twins fan.
Grace helped found the Steeple People Store and volunteered there weekly until shortly before her death. She was also a founding member of CE, Chapter P.E.O., and an active member of Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church, Diamond Lake Garden Club and ?The Group,? her bridge group. She touched many people with her warmth, hospitality and sense of fun. Once you met her, she was a friend for life.
Grace is proceeded in death by her husband, Raymond, and son-in-law, Tony Blodgett. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Sharon Anderson, Eagan; and Charles and Lana Anderson, Helena, MT; as well as daughters and son-in-law, Karin and David Benson, Gordon, WI, and Susan Anderson, Duluth. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren, as well as her brother and sisters-in-law, James and Martha Fish, Floral City, FL; and Henrietta Anderson, Osceola, WI.
Memorial service Friday, August 24, 2007, 11:00 a.m., Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, Minneapolis. Lunch will follow the service. Memorials may be given to the Steeple People Store.
