Herman H. Schneider, 89, of St. Paul, Minn., passed away Friday, November 23, 2012, at Maryhill Manor, Niagara, Wis.
He was born September 5, 1923, in St. Paul, Minn., son of the late Joseph and Anna (Strohmeyer) Schneider. Herman grew up in St. Paul and attended St. Bernard's Grade School and graduated from Mechanic Arts and St. Paul Vocational High Schools in St. Paul. After graduating, Herman enlisted in the United States Army, serving as Staff Sgt. during WWII. Upon being honorably discharged, he attended the University of Minnesota where he received his Bachelor Degree in Engineering.
Herman married Lillian Hockert on October 27, 1956, in St. Paul. While living in St. Paul, he worked for Hamm's Brewing Company as the Plant Engineer in St. Paul for many years. After the plant closed, he moved to Napa Valley, Calif., and was an engineer working in the wine industry. After retiring, Herman and Lillian moved back to St. Paul until most recently moving to Niagara to be closer to their daughter.
While living in St. Paul, Herman was an active member of St. Casimir Catholic Church. He served as President of the Knob Hill and Ullr Ski Clubs in St. Paul. Herman had a passion for woodworking. He will be missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Lillian; three daughters, Ann (Thomas) Johnston, Niagara, Jane (Wade) Hughan, San Francisco, Calif., Judy (Dave) Council, Edwardsville, Ill.; two sisters, Dorothy Naughter, Josephine Vaillancourt, both of St. Paul; seven grandchildren, Thomas (Anna), Mary, John (Corey), Iona, Margot, Mark, and Mae; numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Zimmerman; two brothers, Joseph and Stephen Schneider; three sisters, Theresa Woller, Mary Lystad, and Anne Townsley.
The visitation will be held Saturday, December 1, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Casimir Catholic Church, 934 East Geranium Avenue, St. Paul. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at the church. The Minnesota National Guard will accord military honors at the church. Burial to be held at Calvary Cemetery, St. Paul.
