Olson, John Thomas "Tom"
Lifelong resident of South Minneapolis passed away peacefully on August 21, 2012 in his home at the age of 72. Preceded in death by parents, Herman and Margaret; brother, Doug; brother in law, Wally and great-grandson, Oren. Survived by longtime partner, Darlene; her daughter, Michelle; sons, John (Vicki), Bernie, Dean; and their mother, Janet; brothers, Howie (Sharon) and Frank; sisters, Marilyn (Keith) and Yvonne; grandchildren, Hailey, Brock, Briana, Elly, Thomas, Olivia; great-granddaughter, Aaliyah. Tom was born in Minneapolis and attended South High. He went on to join the Army and served a portion of active duty in Germany. He continued his military service for many years in the army reserves achieving the rank of Master Sargent. Tom's respect for the military and those that served our country was also reflected in his work as a former commander for American Legion Post 1. Following his father's career path, Tom worked in the construction field primarily as a bricklayer. He was employed by many companies including the Minneapolis Park Board and the Minneapolis School Board from which he retired. Always a generous man, Tom built a large circle of friends, many of which he has known from childhood. In recent years, many of those friends met monthly for breakfast club where he was known as "The President". While this covers just a few highlights of Tom's life, it does not come close to the countless ways in which he touched the lives of those who knew and loved him.
