Age 84, Departed this life December 22, 2010.
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, teacher and friend.
Born July 3, 1926 in Norfolk Virginia. Daughter of Ora Kabrich Ferebee and Leigh Cason Ferebee.
Leigh was a beloved only child with loving parents and large extended family. She graduated from Hollins College. She married Fremont H. Jewell in March of 1949. In the early 1950s Leigh and Fremont moved to her beloved Afton where they bought a historic, but dilapidated farmhouse, which they spent many years restoring. Leigh was the founder of Kinderhaus Montessori, one of the early Montessori schools in Minnesota. She raised five children passing on to them her love of travel, education, peace, spirituality, food and the arts. After Leigh retired she accepted a position as an English teacher at Kobe College in Japan where she met the love of her life, Jim Joyce. Leigh and Jim married in September of 1992. They shared a love of travel, the arts, missionary work and their church community. Leigh lovingly supported all of their combined families. Preceded in death by youngest son Scott Jewell she is survived by Husband, Jim Joyce, her children, Frank Jewell (Kathleen Busche), Keith Jewell (Pat), Lyn Jewell, Sarah Poirier (Bill), Jim's children Jean Ann Swarm (David), Jim Joyce, Judy Calcote (Bob); grandchildren, Shawn, Lisa, Ora, Meaghan, Elaya, Kent, Miles, Will, Leah, Adam, Cailin, Russell, Stewart, Phillip and Timothy; great grandchildren, Bethany, Zachary and Kayden; and loving friend Peggy Nowling. Visitation is at 10:00 with the service to follow at 11:00 am on Friday, January 14 at Memorial Lutheran Church (15730 Afton Blvd. South Afton, MN) followed by a luncheon in the church hall. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you give a donation to a non-profit organization of your choice
