A service will be held for Leona Smith, age 76 of Stillwater, on Wednesday, April 11, 11:00 am at People?s Congregational Church, 293 No. Third St., Bayport. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at 10:00 am Friday, April 14 at Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello, Iowa.
Leona died on April 8, 2006 at Lakeview Hospital after a short period of declining health. Leona was born September 2, 1929 to John H. and Olga Egger Smith at Monticello, Iowa. She was schooled in rural Delaware County and graduated from Monticello High School. She graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with the class of 1951. Her early career in social services was spent at Spirit Lake, IA and New Ulm, MN. The remainder of her career was with social services for Washington County, Stillwater, MN.
Leona?s free time was spent listening to a wide range of music, spending time exploring parks and natural areas, canoeing and fishing at her cottage at Fredric, WI; doing the genealogy of both sides of the family and doing extensive reading, gardening and bird watching.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents; and by a dear friend, Jeanette Marty. Surviving are two aunts, several cousins, many dear friends and her two cats.
Memorials preferred to People?s Congregational Church or the Stillwater Public Library.
