Life ended peacefully at home Friday, August 4, 2006. Sixty year wife
of retired Hamline professor William L. Downing; mother of Deborah Gelbach (Philip), John Downing (Marcia) and Elizabeth Colburn (George); grandmother of Katherine & Anna Downing and Jessica & Emily Colburn. Betsy (nA�e Meader) grew up in St. Paul, attended U of M, member of Alpha Phi & graduated from Chatham College. Actively championed the planet?s environmental health & known for her organization of the conference ?Frameworks For The Future.? Most enduring legacy is a long unspoiled stretch of lakeshore on Wabana Lake. A 46-year member of P. E. O.?Chapter K in Jamestown ND & Chapter AB in St. Paul, & Chapter President 1983-1985. Known for her wonderfully engaging conversational ability; eagerness to learn & readiness to discuss new ideas. Blind for the past four years, she depended upon audio publications. Memorial Service and Life Celebration 3 p.m. Saturday, August 26 at Unity Church?Unitarian in St. Paul (corner Portland & Grotto). Memorial tributes suggested to Humane Society for Companion Animals (www.petfinder.org) or the Minnesota State Services for the Blind (www.mnssb.org).
