Passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on November 25, 2012. Preceded in death by parents, Francis & Sadie, daughter Karen, sister Dorothy Heath and brother John. Survived by wife of 56 years, Ellen (nee Gammel); daughter, Julie Johnson (Daniel Pruitt); son, Gary Johnson (Janet); grandchildren, Nick & Rachel; siblings, Phyllis, Wayne, Beverly Ebbecke (George); many nieces and nephews. Merle graduated Magna Cum Laude from Hamline University with a BA and then went on to graduate with a Masters in Social Work from the University of MN. He was a social worker for 28 years at Hennepin County Medical Center. Merle had his license as an Extra Class ham radio operator and was a Master Mason for 60 years. He was a member of the Minnesota Society of Mayflower Descendants. Visitation Friday, December 14th from 5-8 PM with a Masonic Service at 7:30 PM at Bradshaw, 678 South Snelling at Eleanor. Memorial Service Saturday, December 15th at 11AM with visitation one hour prior at Macalester Plymouth United Church, 1658 Lincoln Avenue, St Paul. Memorials preferred to Communications Center (State Services f/t Blind) and Macalester Plymouth United Church.
