Robert "Cy" Carl Johnson 1926-2017
Robert "Cy" Johnson died January 11, 2017 in hospice care at St. Therese Home, New Hope, MN at 90 years of age. The funeral will be held Tuesday, January 17 at 11 a.m. at Bradshaw Funeral Home, 3131 Minnehaha Avenue, Minneapolis, MN. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Burial with full military honors will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis at 12:15 pm. A luncheon in his remembrance will be at 1 p.m. at Bradshaw Funeral home.
Cy was a World War II veteran, and served as a Browning Automatic Rifleman in Company F, 180th Infantry, 45th Division. He received a Silver Star for Gallantry in Action for his significant contribution in helping break the Siegfried Line, allowing Allied Forces to enter Germany. Later actions included clearing Nurnberg and Munich, and liberating Dachau prisoner-of-war camp. Cy achieved the rank of Private First Class before his discharge at the end of the war.
Cy had a strong work ethic and a love of colorful flowers. He worked for more than 50 years in road construction for employers such as Lundin's and Komatz in Mankato, and Richfield Blacktop also in Minnesota, and Bituminous Roadways in Colorado. He also delighted St. Peter residents every spring and summer with his cheerful display of flowers in his yard.
Cy is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph T. Johnson and Lilly (Anderson) Johnson, and his brother Eugene Johnson. He is survived by his beloved wife Erlinda (Ortiz) Johnson, his sister Florence Ferrier, and five children: Steven Gray, David Gray, Diane (Johnson) Missaghi, Cynthia (Johnson) Zarbano, and Malinda Ortiz Carter. He was also blessed to have eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
