Timothy Nelson

Timothy S. Nelson, 51, of Hugo, Minnesota, formerly of Overland Park, passed away on January 25, 2016, following complications from a courageous two-year battle with lymphoma and its treatment after effects.
Tim, or Dr. Tim as he was affectionately known to his students, was born April 8, 1964, in El Paso, Texas, to William and Susanna Nelson. Tim was raised in Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas, graduating from Shawnee Mission South High School in 1982.
Tim was passionate about life and the people God brought into his life. His highest desire was to bring glory and honor to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
On July 4, 1999, Tim married Jennifer Koenig in Logan, Iowa. They were blessed with three beautiful children, Joseph William on September 27, 2002, Christopher Ronald on July 28, 2005, and Madeline Mae on March 28, 2007. Tim's greatest joy on earth was his family, and he loved nothing more than serving and caring for his wife and children, including coaching his children's soccer teams.
Tim was created to be a teacher. He loved his students, and he was amazed that he was privileged to work at something that brought him so much joy. Tim and Jennifer met while pursuing their PhDs in marriage and family therapy at Purdue University. They were blessed to share not only their marriage, but also their life's work, teaching together at Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana, and Friends University in Lenexa, Kansas. They left Kansas to continue their work together at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Left to cherish Tim's memory are his wife, Jennifer, and their three children, Joseph, Christopher, and Madeline, all of the home; his parents, William and Peg Nelson of Denver, CO; his sisters and brothers, Bill (Jacque) of Garden Plain, KS, Sue (Bill) Longenbaker of Westerville, OH, Mike (Lore) Nelson of Mission, KS, Kevin (Suzanne) Nelson of Lawrence, KS, Pat (Liz) Nelson of Overland Park, KS, and Mary (Paul) Schadler of Denver, CO; his mother and father-in-law, Ron and Jean Koenig of Logan, IA; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Kim (Jeff) Petersen, Denison, IA, Kris (Todd) Tidgren, Carroll, IA, Eric (Sarah) Koenig, Leroy, KS, and Nick (Liz) Koenig, Orange City, IA; and many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, great-nieces, cousins, former students, colleagues, and friends.
Tim was preceded in death by his grandparents and his nephew Brandon Nelson.
A Celebration of Tim's life will be held July 30, 2016 at 2 PM at Christ Community Church, 14200 Kenneth Rd, Leawood, Kansas.
