Passed away peacefully at Regions Hospital on March 26, 2022 surrounded by family members.

John was survived by his brother, Peter Gillen, and sister, Mary (David) Schiltgen; nephew, Andrew (Paula) Gillen and children Amanda, Trinity, and Zackary; niece, Monica (Brian) Flis and children Tyler and Annette; nephew, Jeffrey (Nikki) Schiltgen and children Kendra, Tyler, and Kennedy; nephew Charles Schiltgen and daughter Courtney; niece Laura Drew Gillen.

John graduated from St. Agnes High School 1960 and College of St. Thomas 1964. After completing basic training in Minnesota Army National Guard, he started his career with the State of Minnesota Commerce Department for 40 years.  He was a strong supporter of the Minnesota and national DFL, serving as a delegate to party conventions. After retirement, John enjoyed traveling around the world to Russia, Italy, Germany, China, South America, and Niagara Falls in Canada.  After selling his home of 51 years in Baytown Township, John moved to Boutwells Landing in Oak Park Heights.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 23rd at 11:00am at CHURCH OF ST. CHARLES, 409 3rd St N, Bayport, with visitation one hour prior to the service.  Burial immediately following at St Michaels Catholic Cemetery, Bayport.
