Kathleen Cochran

Kathleen Mayo Cochran passed away from complications of Parkinson’s disease on November 24 at a long-term care facility in Minnesota. She was 73.

Kathleen was born on June 24, 1949 in Munich, Germany to William and Marianne Mayo. Raised in Jacksonville, Florida, she later moved to New York City where she met her husband, Peter, whom she married in 1979. The following year, they relocated to Hastings-on-Hudson, where they lived for almost three decades and raised their sons, Ben and Sam. While living in Westchester, Kathleen was active in Grace Church and the Hastings Youth Council, among other community organizations.

Kathleen received a B.A. in English literature from Mt. Holyoke College, an M.S. in early childhood education from Bank Street College, and an Ed.M. from Teachers College, Columbia University. She was co-creator of the Peaceful Kids Early Childhood Conflict Resolution program at Teachers College. She was author of A Community of Learners , published by Creative Response to Conflict. Her poetry has appeared in Subtropic and The Westchester Review . Upended , a book of her poems, was published in 2020 by Wading River Books.

Kathleen loved to travel, read, write, and cook. She adored art, theater, music, and cinema, especially the films of Buster Keaton. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, wife, sister, daughter, and friend. She is survived by her husband and sons; her sister, Mary Nisbet; and grandchildren, Henry and Cleo.
