The Reverend Dr. Angus G. MacDonald, publisher of the "St. Croix Review" for forty years has died after a short illness. A Stillwater resident, he was 88. For more than two decades he was a Congregational clergyman with churches in Connecticut, Ohio, Kansas and Minnesota. In 1968 he founded Religion and Society, a nonprofit foundation which published the bimonthly "St. Croix Review" journal. The St. Croix Review is being carried on by MacDonald's son Barry.
Angus MacDonald was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1923, the youngest of three children. After graduation from high school and the College of the Bible in Melbourne, he became an ordained minister at the age of 22. He came to the United States in 1946. As there were no flights between the U.S. and Australia at that time, he came on the first troop ship allowing civilians after World War II. It took three weeks. After becoming a naturalized citizen and graduating from Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana he earned a Ph.D at Columbia University in New York City, paying his way by preaching weekends at nearby churches.
He married Rema Fink in Toledo, Ohio in 1956. They have three children Barry (Yoshiko), Gregor (Carolyn) and Beth Ann (Mark) Richter and nine grandchildren Jocelyn, Joshua, Lynanne, Lauren, William and Kathlyn MacDonald, Katie (Derek) Hertz, Emily and Brodan Richter. MacDonald had many interests: reading, writing, camping, golf, and music. He was a long time member of the Stillwater Lion's Club and Stillwater Golf Club. He was known about town for his sense of humor. He brought smiles to everyone he met.
