Dee Hallen

Dee Hallen, 1930-2014
N. Deloris (Hayes) Hallen (84) died Sunday, Oct. 12 in Stillwater, Minn. Having spent the day with her family, Dee passed away peacefully with Doug, her husband of 60 years, by her side. She will be remembered as a loving wife and mother, and as a caring and energetic grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be remembered for her smiles, her baking and her generous spirit.
Dee was born on Aug. 19, 1930 in Flint, Mich., to Harry and Minnie Mae Hayes, and graduated from Flint High School in 1948. After the loss of her mother, she lived with her sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Norm Nichols and treasured her time in their home and place in her life.
She was first introduced to Doug as a pen pal, but Dee decided she didn't want to keep writing to someone she had never met. So, Doug drove to Flint from Rice Lake, Wis., to meet her. They were married in Grand Rapids, MI in 1954 after Doug returned from military service in Germany. From then on, home was wherever Doug and Dee were together. They raised their two daughters with love and patience.
Dee loved her Lord and served Him through altar guild, Stephens ministers, quilting and many encouraging and caring words for all. She taught preschool and Sunday school for years and both were labors of love.
Every visit with Dee was a special occasion. She loved to give away banana bread and hand-knitted afghans, to smother the family with cookies at Christmas, and to host her friends and family. She adopted Doug's Swedish heritage as her own and served a traditional meal with homemade lefse every December. She played games with her grandchildren and made them feel special. Everyone in her life knew they were loved.
She will be missed and still loved by her grateful husband, Doug; daughters Karen (Leonard) and Kathy (Blake); grandchildren Matthew (Lindsay), Kimberly, Kari (Gabriel), Jon, Josh, Ben and Ryan; and great-grandchildren Julian and Ezekiel. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.
