James Taplin

d. January 28, 2006

James E. Taplin, 77, of Stillwater, MN. died January 28, 2006. Survived and dearly missed by daughters, Elizabeth and Susan of Stillwater, MN, sister Dorothy Schaefer of Las Vegas, NV, brother, William Taplin, of Bismarck, N. Dakota, and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, Kenneth and Edith Taplin, wife Charlotte Taplin, and brother Richard Taplin.

Jim attended Minneapolis South High School and later served in the Merchant Marines and US Navy traveling to exotic places. Jim received a Bachelor of Arts, 1963 and a Bachelor of Architecture, 1964 from the University of Minnesota and was an Emeritus member of the American Institute of Architects.

Jim was known for his quick wit, encyclopedic knowledge, artistic talent, and architectural mastery. His multiple professions included: barrel maker, boat builder, ad salesman for Star Tribune, staff architect at Hammel Green & Abrahamson, project manager/architect at Miller, Melby & Roberts, Partner at Hodne/Stageberg Partners, and 14 years serving the community as architect, project manager and respected leader for Hennepin County Facilities Development and Property Services. He was most proud of the retirement plaque he received from his friends at the County.

A long-time resident of Marine on St. Croix, Jim was committed to improving his community. He served many years on the City Council and the Planning Commission in Marine. He also served as a member of the Church Vestry at St. John?s Episcopal Church in Linden Hills, Mpls. and Stillwater Ascension Episcopal Church.

Jim spent much of his retired life working with his hands - creating and building. He frequented the Bayport Public Library weekly to feed his voracious appetite for reading/books/learning. A constant learner, he challenged all those around him to think smarter. His friends and family will remember him for his great sense of humor, his love of the NY Times Sunday crossword puzzles and card games, his deep passion for books and the etymology of words. A seasoned storyteller, he loved to recount his readings, travels and stories to all who would listen. He was fastidious, meticulous, playful, and kind. A thoughtful, loving father who went out of his way to make sure his children had every opportunity; he was a thoughtful and generous man who had a soft spot for animals, children and sweets. All who shared in his life will dearly miss him.

A celebration honoring Jim will be held at the Bradshaw Celebration of Life Center 2800 Curve Crest Blvd., Stillwater, MN 55082, 651-439-5511 on Sat. Feb. 11, 2 p.m., reception following.
