A memorial service for John M. Copeland, 79, of Stillwater, Minnesota, and of Stockholm, Sweden, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 8, in the Chapel at Boutwells Landing, 5600 Norwich Parkway. A reception will follow in the adjacent Town Hall.
Following a courageous battle with cancer, John passed away peacefully on Monday, August 2, with his loving wife of 40 years, Majlis, by his side.
He was born in Beaver, Pennsylvania, in 1925. John visited Sweden frequently during the 1950s and, in 1962, settled in Stockholm. In 1988, he began dividing his time between Sweden and Minnesota. He had recently retired from his language translation business.
John will be forever remembered for his youthful spirit, his passion for the outdoors and protecting the environment, and his zest for adventure. He was a pioneer in a number of pursuits, from skiing and kayaking to using the computer to enhance his translation services. He began downhill skiing before the advent of chairlifts and continued this sport well until his late 70s, ranking seventh nationally in masters ski racing. John also loved to kayak the MA�laren Bay in Stockholm and the St. Croix River in Minnesota, and hike and bike throughout northern Sweden with his grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife, Majlis, daughter Yvonne (Eric) Copeland Wahlo and granddaughters Caroline and Cecilia LA�A�f, all of Stockholm, Sweden; sister Mary (Frank) Koehler of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin; and nieces Kathy (Todd) King of Stillwater, Minnesota, and Chris (Bob) Stukel of Des Plaines, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Lakeview Hospice or the Sierra Club.
