Retired local physician Thomas J. Rose, 70, of Stillwater, died July 21, 2009 at United Hospital in St. Paul.





Tom was born August 31, 1938, in Minneapolis, and was raised by his parents Joseph L. Rose and Louise D. Rose in St. Paul. He attended St. Thomas Academy, the University of Notre Dame and the University of Minnesota for medical school. He was active in many sports, especially golf where he qualified for the U.S. Amateur twice. Tom also served in Vietnam as a medic.





As a local physician, Tom touched and healed many through his years teaching medicine at the University of Minnesota and then as a family doctor and endocrinologist at United Hospital and White Bear Hills Medical Group.





A terrific mind with a passion for global affairs, environmental issues, politics, gardening, woodworking and many other hobbies, Tom spent his last years enjoying the leisure of retirement and offering many of us dynamic discussion and debate on some of the biggest issues facing our world. He was a wonderful, one-of-a kind father, husband and human being.





Tom is survived by his wife, Karen E. Rose; and his children, Margaret A. Rose of Decatur, Ga., and Joseph D. Rose of San Francisco; his two brothers, Robert D. Rose (Lauren Swartz) and James D. Rose (Leslie Rose); as well as many other in-laws, nieces, nephews, and other family members.





He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Joseph L. Rose and Louise D. Rose, and his sister Mary L. Rose (Dick Huberty).





Family will greet friends and share stories of Tom's life in open, casual setting from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2009, at Bradshaw Celebration of Life Center, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd. (northwest corner of Hwy. 36 and County Road 5), in Stillwater.
