SUHLER
Mary Ellen "Brick"
Age 95, peacefully passed away on August 9, 2015, at her home in Oak Park Heights, MN.
Brick was born in Kewanee, IL, on May 21, 1920, the child of Robert and Leona Connery. She and her two sisters, Juanita and Doris were raised by her mother in Aurora, IL. In 1943 she married Fred Suhler. This marriage lasted almost 65 years. They were blessed with 4 children: sons Frederick, Jr. (Mary), Rochester, MN and Stephen (Mary), Redmond, WA, and daughters Ann Cummings (Rich), Stillwater, MN, and Ellen Ellingsen (Larry), Seattle, WA.
Fred and Brick moved around the country during Fred's working years, making many important friendships that lasted throughout their lives. Following Fred's retirement, Brick and Fred divided their time between a residence in Kihei, Maui, and one in Huntington Beach, CA. They had the opportunity to travel extensively, visiting six of the seven continents. During her last years of life in Oak Park Heights, Brick (known as Grandma Brick or "Tutu" to the little ones in the family) stayed feisty, spunky, and positive. Brick loved the ocean and the water, including her daily morning swim. The practice of the Catholic faith was very important to her. She was an excellent bridge player and loved all games including tile rummy, which she taught to countless others. The amazing meals turned out of Brick's kitchen were a testament to her culinary talent.
She is survived by her children, 10 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband, infant son and sisters preceded her in death. Special thanks go to the caring and loving staff at Oak Park Heights Senior Living and St. Croix Hospice.
