C. Paul Lund, age 83, of St Paul, MN, died Monday 26 October in the Good Samaritan Home in Stillwater. He was being well cared for by the compassionate and capable staff of Good Sam and St Croix Hospice at the time of his death due to complications of Parkinson's Disease.
A private ceremony will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery for the immediate family and close friends. Officiating is Chaplin Colin (Reay) Zoellner, of St Croix Hospice.
Born in Kenmare, North Dakota, Paul was raised by his mother, Maude and grandmother Susie, after his father died when Paul was 4 years of age. An only child, and despite the impact of the great depression as well as his father's death, he recalled his early years as "the best childhood one could want". He graduated in 1950 from Kenmare High School and the following year joined the US Navy where he was stationed in South Carolina from 1951-55. In 1956 Paul married Gunhild Jorgensen, after she had recently emigrated from Denmark to live in Minnesota.
Paul and Gunhild lived in Oakdale, MN and raised 2 daughters. In 1978 they purchased a cabin on the Gunflint Trail, which became their home away from home, eventually moving to the cabin after retirement. This provided them with many life long "up north" friendships and ties to the beauty of the BWCA, which they lovingly shared with their children and grandchildren. Paul worked for Northern States Power until his retirement in 1988 and cherished their many friends from his days at NSP.
In 1998 they moved permanently to Green Valley, AZ and loved their life in the sun with long views of the Santa Rita Mountains. When Gunhild died in 2007, it became increasingly difficult for Paul to live alone due to failing eyesight. Paul moved back to MN in 2009 and lived at Becketwood on W River Parkway briefly, until his health began to deteriorate and he could no longer live independently. He moved into an assisted living facility in Roseville in 2010 and then to Good Samaritan in late 2012.
He is survived by daughters Kim Lund and husband Chris Paulin (New Zealand) & Kelly Lund (St Paul), grandchildren Carey Lund Biron & Jess Schnabel, Odin Lund Biron, Isaac & Megan Nadeau and Molly Nadeau. He has 2 beautiful great grandchildren Chase Nadeau and Juniper Biron. A special acknowledgement to Maureen Kenney, Tamarisk volunteer, who has never missed a week in visiting with Paul during the length of his illness and provided love and support to all of us.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Gunhild (Jorgensen) Lund, his mother Maude Mary (O'Fallon) Nelson, step father Otto E Nelson and father Arndt F Lund.
