Christiane Schüler Seiler died peacefully on April 12th, 2026 at the age of 96 in Minneapolis, MN. Her daughter, Barbara, was by her side.
Christa was originally from Bochum, Germany, where she lived with her parents, Hans and Liesl Schüler, and her older sister, Bärbel. She grew up during WWII, and often spoke of sirens and air raids, and having to run to bomb shelters with her family, sneaking in their airedale terrier, Axel, in a large tote bag. Her school was bombed during the war, but in spite of an interrupted education, Christa managed to study foreign languages, and worked for a travel agency in Paris for one year. At 28 she emigrated to Syracuse, NY, and was briefly (and disastrously) married to another German immigrant, Harry Seiler. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Syracuse University, and her Master’s and PhD in Germanic Studies from Washington University in St. Louis, MO.
Christa became a single mother to Barbara during graduate school, at a time when unwed mothers faced shame and prejudice. And yet, she was able to finish her education, write her dissertation and work full time, fully supporting herself and Barbie, with the help and generosity of many friends. She made it her mission to ensure that her daughter grow up fluent in German, and was impervious to filial pushback. Christa spent most of her teaching career at Indiana University at Ft. Wayne, opting to stay in a safe if unfulfilling position for the stability and security it afforded. She was active, writing poetry and publishing numerous professional papers, attending conferences and seminars, and retiring in 1996 as an associate professor.
In retirement, Christa moved to Minneapolis, teaching German, French, and Spanish at the Edina Community Center, swimming in Cedar Lake every summer, and filling her days with concerts, theater, and travel. She loved her daughter and granddaughters fiercely, tirelessly attending every performance.
Never one to bake cookies, instead she wrote them annual birthday poems, complete with rhyming couplets and esoteric literary references. At every visit, she insisted on a rematch of her favorite game 'Mensch, Ärgere Dich Nicht', the German version of the game 'Sorry', remaining gleeful no matter how badly she lost.
She loved her daughter and granddaughters fiercely. While she was entirely unable to cook a meal for them, she loved to watch them play and encouraged their creative games. She got season tickets to the Children’s Theatre and took the girls as soon as they were able to go. She tirelessly and enthusiastically attended every recital and performance the girls were in. In her last years, she peppered every conversation with the question, “wann kommst Du wieder?” (“when are you going to visit me again?”)
Christa will be remembered for the berets she wore, her love of dogs, pigs, guinea pigs, her strong opinions and an inability to keep them to herself. At 96 she was preceded in death by almost everyone in her family and older circle of friends, most notably her best friend of 80 years, Christel Neff. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Shaterian, her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Bella and Raj Satpathy-Horton, and granddaughter, Lillie Horton, as well as Larisa Shaterian.
A celebration of Christiane’s life will be held at 2:00 on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at Bradshaw, 2800 Curve Crest Boulevard, Stillwater, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Family will receive friends following the service.
