Dale Donald Johnson, age 79, of Stillwater, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 19, 2026, surrounded by loved ones who were there to comfort him on his final journey.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Betty Johnson, and his brother, Patrick Johnson.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Debra; his step-sons, Chad and Chris (Gloria); his children, Brian (Danie) and Kristi; his step-grandchildren, Shayla, Summer, and Sydney; his grandchildren, Samantha and Ashton; and countless other beloved family members and friends.
Born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on May 8, 1947, Dale was raised in the Twin Cities and graduated from Anoka High School in 1965. He enjoyed a long career with Stillwater Area Public Schools (School District #834), where he held a variety of positions. One could say he was the eyes and ears of the institution!
Dale met Debra in the 1980s through their shared love of music, and their romance blossomed into a lifelong partnership. They married in July 1986 and began building a life together filled with love, laughter, music, and countless memories.
Dale was a strong leader throughout his life, someone we all looked up to and knew we could count on, no matter what life threw our way. He was an incredibly loving husband, a devoted father and stepfather, and a proud grandpa who cherished every opportunity to share his love. He had a special way of making people smile with his all-too-familiar "Dale-isms," or, as some called them, "Paisms!" His words of wisdom, humor, and unmistakable personality will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Another of Dale's great passions was cars. Whether he was admiring his pride and joy, a 1963 SplitWindow Corvette, faithfully following NHRA drag racing, or tinkering with his collection of cars, he was happiest when he was surrounded by horsepower and all things automotive. For more than 50 years, he made an annual Labor Day weekend tradition of traveling to Indianapolis for the NHRA Nationals with family and friends. Dale also shared his extensive automotive knowledge with so many of us, teaching us about cars (especially Fords!) and how to repair and maintain them. Of course, he always had the knowledge-and, more importantly, the tools-to get the job done!
Music was another lifelong passion. Dale was an outstanding bass guitarist who played for years with his band, Driftwood. And here's a fun fact: that's where the romance began, when he met a certain groupie named Debra! Throughout his life, Dale could also be found jumping onstage with other bands whenever the opportunity arose. One memorable example was his surprise appearance playing with the Rockin' Hollywoods on Chris and Gloria's wedding night. He fit right in, jamming as though he had played with them for years. Pure talent, pure entertainment, and pure Dale!
As Whitney Houston sang, Dale and Debra shared the "Greatest Love of All." Celebrating more than 40 years of marriage, they stood by each other through life's joys and challenges. Their unwavering love and devotion inspired all of us, offering a beautiful example of what it means to build a life together. They were each other's rock and a steady source of comfort and strength, helping those around them weather life's storms.
Dale leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, laughter, music, and unforgettable memories. He was a husband, father, stepfather, grandpa, friend, musician, car enthusiast, and trusted source of wisdom who touched countless lives. His absence will be felt deeply, but his stories, his humor, his passions, and his love will continue to live on in all of us.
He will be dearly missed by so many. Turn the Page, Dale! Celebration of Life
