Daniel Winston Schultz

February 28, 1951 — June 16, 2025

Daniel Winston Schultz, Dan or "Hawkeye", age 74, passed away unexpectedly in Stillwater MN on June 16, 2025 a few weeks after elective shoulder surgery.

Dan was born on Feb 28, 1951 in Charles City, Iowa. His parents were LaVonne and Albert Schultz. He had seven siblings and grew up on a farm near Rockford, Iowa.

At the age of 3, Dan contracted polio which affected his ability to walk. He had several surgeries and rehabilitation treatments as a child. His mother would take him for extended periods to Colorado for rehab and chiropractic treatments. He primarily used crutches to assist with walking and a wheelchair in his later years. He graduated from Rockford High School in 1969. He attended Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa and worked as an engineer/draftsman for NSP/Xcel Energy retiring after 33 years.

Hawkeye married Susan (known as "Chopper") E. Hamann on January 4,1975. They became proud parents to sons, Cale and Tyler. Hawkeye embraced being a part of the disability community as a strong role model and leader. As a child he attended Camp Sunnyside, part of Easter Seal Society for people with disabilities. He went on to become a camp counselor specializing in arts and crafts at the camp. He was looked up to by all the campers and maintained many lifelong friendships from his formative camp counselor days. Dan and Sue met while they were counselors at Camp Sunnyside and returned to be married at the Camp.

Hawkeye did not shy away from anything and lived life large. He was positive, outgoing and enjoyed life. He was extremely proud to be a father and grandfather. He was an organizer and leader for Courage Kenny Alpine Skiers, built his own ski chair and took many family ski trips out west. He was an active team member with the St Paul Rolling Thunder wheelchair basketball and softball teams for 13 years, winning 12 national softball championships. He also completed the RAGBRAI bike ride across the state of Iowa. His "Firefly" battery attachment to his wheelchair allowed him to speedily take off in the community, and on the trails to downtown Stillwater. Some say he practiced "danger therapy" because he loved pushing limits.

Hawkeye enjoyed all types of music, attending various music festivals across the country with his wife, Sue. For more than 20 years he was a member of the Bayport Library Troubadours band that plays locally at community events. One of his favorite pastimes was singing and playing guitar along with his sons and many friends around the home campfire. Occasionally in the summer he would be seen "busking" in downtown Stillwater. He repaired many old guitars, built his own instruments and loved to save money by fixing cars and doing various household repairs. Hawkeye was known for thoroughly enjoying shopping at Menards and hobnobbing with fellow customers. Fishing with his brothers (Larry, Duane and Mark), sons, nephews, and grandson Adam was a highlight for him in the summer.

His grandchildren loved being at the "Schultz Ranch" with grandpa - riding his scooter, working in the yard, playing games, making music and celebrating many holidays and occasions. He was his grandchildren's biggest fan and supporter on countless sidelines, gymnasiums, auditoriums and fields over the years. One of their favorite annual outings was visiting Franconia Sculpture Park with grandma and grandpa.

Hawkeye was a good friend to many, a brother, devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Hawkeye is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Larry Schultz and Virgil Brown. He is survived by Sue, his wife of 50 years; sons Cale (Kelly) and Tyler (Erika) Schultz; grandchildren Anya, Natalie, Adam and Audrey; siblings, Peggy Cheney, Ben (Val ) Schultz, Duane (Jane) Schultz, Mark (Beth) Schultz, Ginny Brown and many nieces and nephews.

A special thanks from the family goes to Steve Heselton, Sue and Hawkeye's "Ranch Manager". In lieu of flowers, for those who wish to contribute, the family suggests donations to Allina Health Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute Adaptive Ski and nowboard Program or to Easterseals Iowa Camp Sunnyside.
