Darlene Joyce Weiss, aged 88, was called to her eternal home in heaven on March 25, 2026, by the grace of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Darlene was born on April 30, 1937, to John and Hedwig (Hattie) Filenius in Helenville, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother, Lloyd John; and infant son, Daniel John.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 65 years, Joel; children, Rebecca (Steven) Vilendrer, Christine Willett, and Stephen (Angelika) Weiss; grandchildren, Jonathan, Michael, Jonah, Lauren, Thea (Timothy), Lena, and Micah; great-grandson, Michael. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Helga Weiss, Barbara Goodwin, Susan Weiss, and Janet Mahlzahn, along with many nieces and nephews and their families.
Darlene had a strong Christian faith and was confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Helenville, Wisconsin on Palm Sunday in 1951. Her confirmation verse was from John 8:36, "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."
She attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where she met Joel through the Lutheran social group Gamma Delta. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1959. She was a vocalist and pianist and taught music in the Milwaukee Public Schools for two years, before she became a private piano teacher. She taught piano lessons from her home for 58 years and had 40-60 students come for lessons each week. Even though our family moved from Milwaukee to Chicago to Minneapolis, and then back to Milwaukee, she was a highly regarded teacher and was able to build a new and large piano studio very quickly after each move. Darlene shared the lifelong joy of music with hundreds of piano students in the Midwest. She also was a church organist and took organist roles on an interim basis at several Lutheran churches. At the Waverly Gardens care facility, where she recently resided, she quickly found two grand pianos, one in the rotunda and one in the chapel, and she played the piano in the rotunda from her wheelchair nearly every day. At Christmas, she played Christmas carols and hymns and thus witnessed her faith to the other residents that gathered around to enjoy her music. She received many, many compliments on her piano playing at Waverly Gardens.
Darlene was an accomplished tennis player, and she played nearly every day of the week in a tennis league for over three decades. She also enjoyed bridge, golf, church social activities, sewing, cooking, and spending time with family on vacations in Florida and Door County, Wisconsin.
Most importantly, Darlene was a very devoted mother and was involved in her children's activities in school, sports and music. Her career enabled her to help support her family, and she was always offering to help each of us, whenever and however she could. Her children remember her as a kind, compassionate and generous mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals and dreams.
The family would like to thank the caregivers that took care of Darlene in her home for several years and the Enhanced Assisted Living staff at Waverly Gardens for the wonderful care and kindness that was shown to her.
Darlene now rests from her earthly labors in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life, secured for her through the saving work of Jesus Christ.
"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints."
- Psalm 116:15
