David Lee Belair
March 17, 1933 - October 13, 2026
David Lee Belair passed away peacefully on October 13, 2026, at the age of 93, after a rich and full life marked by adventure and a deep love for his family and friends.
Dave was born on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1933, in Bemidji, Minnesota, the oldest of the six children of Maurice and Bernice Belair. Dave left High School early to join the U.S. Navy and served as a Yeoman Third Class aboard the USS Point Cruz during the Korean War.
When his service ended, Dave returned home to Bemidji, where he earned his General Educational Diploma (GED) and married Ordelma Jeanne Burlingame. Together they raised two children, Patrick and Michele ("Coogie"). Dave and Jeanne moved to the Twin Cities and made their home on Saint Paul's East Side for decades. In retirement, Dave and Jeanne settled in Pine River, Minnesota, and most recently lived at Boutwells Landing in Oak Park Heights.
Dave spent 26 years with the U.S. Postal Service, first working the postal trains and later at the Main Post Office in Saint Paul. Later in his career, he also served as an auctioneer for the Post Office.
Dave was happiest outdoors. He hunted and trapped all across Minnesota and lent his skills to the Department of Natural Resources in animal and pest control. Known affectionately as "The Mad Trapper," he loved handing out a business card that celebrated the art of trapping and his pride as a son of Minnesota's Northwoods. For many of his family and friends, there was no greater honor than an invitation to "walk the trap line" with him.
Dave was a remarkable man and a good friend to all. To the very end, he held his friendships close and never lost the playful spirit that drew so many people to him. He will be dearly missed.
Dave is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne; his children, Pat (Ann) and Michele (Joe); five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brothers, John and Tom, and sister Marlene.
He was preceded in death by his brother Larry and his sister, Nancy.
A graveside service will be held at noon on Friday, October 23, 2026, at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls. A reception will follow at the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum, adjacent to the cemetery.
