Doris Ozell Asp

Doris Ozell Asp, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully in Bayport, Minnesota, on September 15, 2026, at the age of 97. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, kindness, perseverance, and service to others.

Doris was born on September 20, 1928, in Canton, Texas, to John and Fannie Montgomery. She graduated from the Austin School for the Blind in Austin, Texas, where she developed skills and a passion for helping others that would become an important part of her life.

On June 2, 1953, Doris married Raymond Asp in Houston, Texas. Together they raised three children, Linda, Terry, and Rick. Her family was the center of her world, and she took great pride and joy in watching her family grow through the generations.

Doris devoted much of her working life to helping others. She was a Braille teacher at the Lighthouse for the Blind in Houston, where she was recognized for designing a Braille checkbook. She also worked as a healthcare worker in an assisted living care facility and in catering. Her commitment to her community extended beyond her working years. She volunteered with both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and spent time at children's schools, where students especially enjoyed learning about reading and writing Braille from her.

Doris found happiness in the outdoors and in the traditions she shared with her family. She loved ice fishing from the fish shack on Mille Lacs Lake, spending summers fishing "Up North," traveling, and taking walks along the beach. She loved gardening and took great pleasure in growing and caring for her plants. But perhaps her greatest gift was found in her kitchen. Doris loved cooking and baking for family and friends, and her chocolate chip cookies, bars, coffee cakes, and hot dishes became treasured favorites that will live on in family memories.

She had a generous spirit and a way of making people feel cared for. Whether she was teaching a child Braille, helping someone in need, tending her garden, preparing a favorite family recipe, or sitting around the fish shack with those she loved, Doris gave of herself freely. Her life was filled with purpose, family, friendship, and countless acts of kindness.

Doris is survived by her children, Linda Gonzalez (Rome), Terry Asp, and Rick Asp; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and her brother, Leonard Montgomery. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Asp; her grandson Jason Asp; her parents, John and Fannie Montgomery; her brothers and sisters, Melvin Montgomery, Roy Montgomery, Claudie Brown, William George Montgomery, Ruth McClintock, Lorene Thursten, Lloyd Montgomery, Jewel Stevens, Juanita Tant, Marvin Montgomery, and Harvey Montgomery.

Doris's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, family, generosity, and service. The memories she created, the lives she touched, and the traditions she passed down will remain with her family for generations to come.

A private service will be held for the family as they gather to honor and celebrate her life.
