Patrocinio “Patsy” (Pagaduan) Schweickart passed away peacefully in her Oak Park Heights home on Saturday, October 28, 2023. She is survived by her husband, David Schweickart; children, Anita MacDonald, Karen Schweickart; grandchildren, Carrie, Liam, Grace, Lauryn; siblings, Jiji Nawalinski, Sunny Pagaduan, Carol Araullo; brother-in-law, Jun Bandayrel; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tomas and Caridad and her sisters, Maureen Pagaduan and June Lopez.
Patsy was born and raised in the Philippines. She first came to the United States at the age of fifteen as the Philippine delegate to the New York Herald Tribune World Youth Forum, where she stayed for three months, appearing several times on WYF television broadcasts. After graduating from the University of the Philippines, she returned to the United States, earning Masters degrees at the University of Virginia (chemical engineering) —where she met and married David Schweickart--and at Ohio State University (mathematics), before switching gears and obtaining a PhD in English at Ohio State University.
She created a career for herself teaching English and Women’s Studies at the University of New Hampshire and Purdue University. She balanced a fulfilling career, a long-distance marriage and raising children. She enjoyed bowling, racquetball, ping pong and dancing, and played the piano as well. Patsy edited several books and published many academic articles. One of her great joys was in spending time with her children and grandchildren, taking them on adventures to the Grand Canyon, to Scotland, walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain, among others.
In recent years, she and David settled in Oak Park Heights, Minnesota to be nearer to their daughters. Patsy wasted no time in investing in her new community at Boutwells Landing, playing mahjong twice a week, ping pong three times a week (until she couldn’t), attending most of the concerts and other events held there. Her energy, intellect, courage and love of life were an inspiration to all.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at 3:00pm on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at Bradshaw, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd, Stillwater, with visitation beginning two hours prior at 1:00pm.
