In loving memory of Edward "Ed" Krugmire, age 72, of Afton, MN, who passed away on October 20, 2025 at his beloved Farm / Mill in Caledonia, MN.
Ed was a man of many hats, both literally and figuratively. He excelled in many sports growing up including football (Captain senior year), basketball, baseball, and softball, while also involved in 4H woodworking, and was voted homecoming king of Houston High School class of 1971. Ed went on to attend Winona State University where he was a member of the Warrior Football Team for four years playing Outside Linebacker. He also played baseball at Winona State. He became a talented industrial arts teacher, drivers education instructor, and coach starting in Iowa before moving to Stillwater. Teacher lay-offs in Stillwater School District led to "Krugmire Carpentry," remodeling, handyman, and assistant to Jay Roettger's "Bluff City Builders" company. Ed was Jay's "detail man." One of Ed's favorite TV shows was "Walker, Texas Ranger," so later in life, karate was added to his list of sports. He was still playing softball on the 60+ team and often had to run the bases for the hitters that could no longer run! He played on many different softball teams 2-3 times per week! Ed was a perfectionist on the ballfield and when it came to his construction, remodeling, woodworking, and carpentry. . . Clean up? Not so much!
Ed was known for his loyalty, and always strived to keep his promises. One of which was his dedication to Schech's Mill, a water powered flour mill built in 1876 that has been in the Krugmire family for four generations. Ed enjoyed grinding wheat, corn, and rye into flour, while giving tours of his mill that was on the National Historic Registry. After taking on the tremendous responsibility of Schech's Mill, Ed could fix just about anything. If a part was no longer available, he designed one and had it made. Another promise was to his friends, many of which he played softball with, and was infamously known as "Fast Eddie." He knew the importance of practice, and never missing a game. Whether it was running for a player or offering his construction expertise, Ed took joy in serving the people he cared about. His final and biggest promise was to love and care for his dear wife of 34 years, and his daughter whom they adopted in 1999. Whether it be brushing a snowy car off, attending gymnastics meets, taking Jonie to Mayo followed by a stop at Kwik Trip; i.e., Ed's idea of a date night, or making sure the car was stocked with at least five flashlights, he was determined to make sure his girls were taken care of!
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Eleanor (Schech) Krugmire, and his sister Elaine (Krugmire) Tighe.
He is survived by his wife Jonie, daughter Carey, brother-in-law Jim Tighe, future son-in-law Jason Hawksford, and many, many dear friends and extended family.
There was a right way, a wrong way, and then there was Ed's way, and that will live on for years to come. There will never be another "Ed!"
