He retired from 3M Pharmaceuticals in 1999. George lived a very fulfilling life with many and varied interests. Family came first, reading, photography, music, cooking, travel and getting together for meals with family & friends. From an early life he was fascinated by science and the world around him, influenced by his first grade teacher, Leona Havens in Ottumwa, Iowa. He had a lifelong interest in astronomy. At the University of Nebraska, he presented evening sky shows at the Mueller Planetarium, contributed many articles to Sky & Telescope. Music played an integral part of his life also. An accomplished trumpet player, he played in his high school band, small dance bands, the University of Nebraska Symphonic Band and was President of the U of N Marching Band. As a young teenager he was interested in "magic" and became quite an accomplished amateur illusionist performing at parties and talent shows. He appeared on an early TV show with Johnny Carson, also an amateur magician, in Omaha, Nebraska. In later years he regaled his grandkids with slight-of-hand tricks. He was a member of the Scandia/Marine Lion's Club. At George's request there will be no funeral services. A celebration of his life will be held in the fall. Special thanks to the Marine on St. Croix First Responders team, staff at Lakeview Hospital and the Gables at Boutwells Landing, and to Dr. Donald Wessel for their care of George.
