Age 75, died peacefully surrounded by his family on the evening of December 28, 2010 at The Gables at Boutwells Landing in Stillwater, Minnesota. He waged a courageous four-year battle with advanced lung cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Frances. He is survived by his wife, Audrey; sons, James (Jane), Joseph (Kristen), and John (Anne-Marie Mischel); and grandchildren, James, Daniel, Amelia and Emmett. Jim was born June 20, 1935 and raised in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1962) with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and later worked at 3M while earning his J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul (1969). After graduating from law school, he worked in 3M's Office of General Counsel in its Intellectual Property Department. He entered private practice in 1972 and joined Fredrikson and Byron in Minneapolis in 1977, where he founded and led the firm's Intellectual Property Department and spent the remainder of his career. Jim loved the practice of law. He had a deep attachment to his friends, colleagues and clients at Fredrikson, and was considered a mentor to many. Outside of work, Jim's passions included spending time with family, sailing on Lake Pepin and traveling the world with the love of his life, Audrey. One of his favorite memories was sailing the Greek Islands with his wife and family in 2007. Jim's family extends a special thanks to all the health care professionals at the Mayo Clinic and The Gables at Boutwells Landing for their compassion and care. Jim was an inspiration to his family and will be greatly missed. Service Sunday, January 2, 2011 at 2PM at GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1669 Arcade Street North.
