James Martin Smith

Age 74, of Stillwater, Minnesota, passed away on August 5, 2023.

James was a 1966 graduate of Simley High School and later received a Culinary Degree at St. Paul Area Technical Vocational Insitute (TVI), and an Associate Degree from Century College. He had a lifelong career in the food and hospitality industry.

James had a quiet and adventurous spirit. He built an off-grid cabin 50 years ago in the Nemadji State Forest, mostly with hand tools, and spent the last three years rebuilding it. He died suddenly inside his beloved retreat with his wife at his side. Many times James told people that if he should die at the cabin they would know he died happy.

James was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Margaret Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Mary, son Dr. Benjamin Smith (Erin Nelson), granddaughter Margot Smith, and sister Kathleen Isaacs (Paul Richardson). Also, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A celebration of James' life will be held Friday, August 18, 2023, 3:00 P.M. at BRADSHAW CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTER (2800 Curve Crest Boulevard, Stillwater) with a visitation beginning at 2:00 P.M.
