It is with much grief that we announce the passing of Jame Patrick Dunn on August 13, 2025. Jim died with his children by his side. He was preceded in death by his wife Janet (nee Bowe).
Son of Franklin and Othelia (Schaub) Dunn, Jim was born in Ortonville March 22, 1932. His parents moved to Red Wing during the depression, when Jim was 3 years old, as the Red Wing banks had not failed.
Growing up in a small town, Jan and Jim knew of each other in childhood. One of their early encounters was when Jim taught a swimming class in which Jan was a student, when they were in high school. Jim and Jan married June 12, 1960 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Red Wing.
Jim graduated from St. Thomas Military Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1949. Following graduation from St. Thomas College, he served in the Air Force. Prior to attending medical school, he was employed by Honeywell. He graduated from the University of South Dakota's School of Medicine. Following completion of a residency in otolaryngology at the University of MInnesota, he practiced as an ear, nose, and throat doctor in St. Paul until retirement in 1989. He served on the boards of St. Thomas Academy, the Isles Yacht Club, and the Charlotte County Symphony Orchestra and multiple medical committees.
Jim and Jan started out their married life in South Dakota. They then moved to the Twin Cities and then to North Oaks where they lived for many years. They retired to Punta Gorda, Florida for 20 years, boated, and traveled the world. They then returned to North Oaks to be near family for their remaining days.
Jim is survived by his five children and their families: Pat (Renee and preceded by grandson Michael), Kevin (Jessie and grandchildren Andy, Anna, Lucy, Sally, and Emily), Tara (Ilya and step grandchild Yasha (Berchenko-Kogan), Emma, and great grandchildren Emmett, Ari, and Nadia; Amiel, Sasha, and Zack) Berchenko, Sean, and Shannon.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jim Dunn’s name to St. Vincent de Paul charity at https://saintvdp.org/online-donations.
