on October 10, 2015. Age 87. Preceded in death by sister, Anne. Survived by wife, Marlys of 57 years; brother, Dan Hartmann; sister, Ada Hartmann; children, William, Ruth, and Kurt (Rene); grandchildren, Jackie, Steven, Jenny and Katie; great grandchildren, Bobbi Jo, Christopher and Sophia; nieces and nephews.
John Hartmann was born April 12, 1928 in Bismarck, ND to William F. Hartmann and Ethel L. Hartmann and raised in the Lutheran faith in Washburn, ND. He grew up just North of Bismarck in Washburn, ND, where his dad ran the lumberyard. After finishing highschool in Washburn, he attended North Dakota State University for civil engineering and graduated in December 1951. He entered the army in September 1952 and was honorably discharged in August 1954. He served overseas in Korea. After returning from the service, he went to Purdue University in 1954 and received a Masters degree in Civil Engineering in Spring, 1956. After school, he began working as an engineer for Toast, King, and Day in St. Paul MN and later took a job at Northern Pacific in November, 1958. He met Marlys Ann Huppert while working at Toast, King and Day during shared coffee breaks with the insurance company next door, where Marlys worked. They got married in August 1958. They have three children: William, Ruth, and Kurt (Rene), four grandchildren: Jackie, Steven, Jenny, and Katie and three great-grandchildren: Bobbi Jo, Christopher, and Sophia. In 1983, his job at Burlington Northern transferred him to Overland Park, Kansas. He continued working in railroad bridge engineering until retiring in 1991. After retiring, he and Marlys moved back to the Twin Cities to live near his children, his brother Dan and Marlys' family. He loved to garden, volunteer his time on building projects including Habitat for Humanity, serve on church committees, and being a loving husband to Marlys.
Memorial service Wednesday 11:00AM at OUR SAVIOR'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1616 W. Olive Street, Stillwater. Private interment Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation one hour prior to the service. Memorials preferred to Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
