Kurt Emil Heikkila

Kurt Heikkila, age 70, of Marine on St. Croix, MN, passed away on February 17th, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of innovation, curiosity, and deep love for his family and the simple joys of everyday life.

Born in Virginia, MN and raised there and on Lake Vermilion, Kurt developed an early fascination with how things worked. Encouraged by his parents to explore and learn widely, he began inventing and building at an early age, even running a Christmas wreath business with his father as a teenager. That spirit of entrepreneurship would shape the course of his life.

Kurt earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and chemistry from Concordia College and later a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Minnesota–Duluth. His career reflected a lifelong passion for discovery and practical problem-solving. Over the years, he founded and led innovative companies, including Aspen Research and later Tundra Companies, serving as CEO. A prolific inventor, Kurt held more than 80 patents and contributed to advancements in composite materials and everyday products used around the world. Despite his many professional achievements, he remained humble and believed innovation came from persistence, creativity, and a willingness to learn through trial and error.

Outside of work, Kurt found his greatest peace in nature and at home. He loved fishing, especially the experimentation that it took to figure out what the fish would bite on. He enjoyed cooking delicious food and enjoyed having a bottle of red wine with his food. He also took pride in working in his yard, always improving, building, or tending to something with his hands. Whether solving a technical challenge or caring for his yard, he approached everything with patience, focus, and care.

Those who knew Kurt remember his intelligence, determination, humor, and generous willingness to share knowledge. As a husband, father, grandfather, and mentor, he encouraged others to stay curious, think independently, and never stop learning.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Beth; his children, Jennifer Kramer (Brian), Emily Heikkila (Kyle Larson), and Andrew Heikkila; his grandchildren, Kyle and Kelsey Kramer and Grace Heikkila; and his sister, Robyn Heikkila (Andrew Wahrenbrock), along with many friends, colleagues, and mentees whose lives were shaped by his guidance.

A celebration of life will be on Tuesday, March 3rd, 4:00-8:00 pm at Bradshaw, 2800 Curve Crest Boulevard, Stillwater. with a time of sharing at 6:30 pm.
