Laurence "Larry" Schumi

Born Oct 9, 1944, to Joseph and Dolores Schumi in St. Paul, Minnesota. Larry was an alumnus of Cretin High School, graduating with the rank of Cadet Major and a nomination to West Point, and received his civil engineering degree from the University of Minnesota.
A long-time employee of MTC/Metro Transit, Larry drove bus a during college and took pride in his career as a civil engineer, a vocation which matched his precise and exacting personality.
Music was a constant in Larry's life, from marching with the St. Paul Scouts drum and bugle corps as a youth through to playing in the Johnny Owen Band, the Bavarian Musikmeisters, and other bands. He was also a proud member of the St. Paul Police Band for over 50 years, where he was the recipient of many raucous "woohoos" from his mother in the audience. Proficient with a variety of instruments including bass, tuba, trombone, organ, and harmonica, he continued to entertain with music even into his final years at Harmony River Care Center.
In what spare time his musical inclinations allowed, Larry enjoyed reading, coffee, aviation, sailing, target shooting, amateur radio (WB0GOP), swimming, science fiction, and chiding his nephew's automotive purchases.
Larry was always devoted to his family and generous with his time, talents, and treasure; his brothers Joseph and Michael, sister Virginia, nieces Jennifer (Mike) and Melissa, nephews Zach (Bess) and Matt (Michelle), and many grandnieces and grandnephews will miss his annual harmonica renditions of "Happy Birthday." He will also be missed by lifelong friend and bonus brother, Dennis Bettendorf (Carole).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Dolores; sisters-in-law Win Ann and Ruth; and brother-in-law Randy.
