Mary E. McComber, 71, a life well-lived that ended too soon. Mary, Mayor of Oak Park Heights, Minnesota (2012-2025) passed away peacefully on May 26, 2025 with her family by her side after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Never one to take the easy road, she fought to the bitter end, refusing to accept what this horrible disease brought upon her.
Mary was born October 31, 1953 to Peter and Mary Jane Murphy of Chicago, IL. Mary's life was that of a home-maker and interior decorator until she discovered a new passion, her love and concern for Oak Park Heights.
Initially a member of the town council from 2000-2012, she then served as mayor from 2012 until her passing. During her tenure, Mary was awarded the 2016 C.C. Ludwig Award, League of Minnesota Cities and the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award, Minnesota Women in City Government. While she was indeed proud to receive these awards, her true love was the well-being of Oak Park Heights. The St. Croix Crossing Bridge was achieved in large part due to her unwavering tenacity to get the job done. Her mark has been pressed into the fabric of Oak Park Heights.
Mary is survived by her husband of 30 years, the funniest man she ever knew, Don McComber; daughters, Lisa Bernhjelm-Corblick (Brian Friberg) and Laura (Gary) Brown and son, Brett (Stephanie) Bernhjelm; brother, Peter Murphy (Ann Maugherman) of McCordsville, IN; grandchildren, Brandon Rothmeier ( US ARMY), Matthew Corblick, Andrew Corblick, Benjamin Corblick, Ella Brown, Ava Brown, Serena Bernhjelm, Jethro Bernhjelm, Viola Bernhjelm, Ryleigh Friberg, Ava Friberg and Marshall (Veronica) Marmian; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Jennifer; birth parents, Emmett and Margaret Galvin; and sister, Margie Bernson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.
