Mary Lee Speich passed away Wednesday, July 8, peacefully at home with family and caregivers at her side after coping with health issues over the past year.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Leona Speich, and her brother, Jon Speich. Mary is now reunited with several of her favorites.
Mary is survived by her brothers Tim (Deb) Speich and Dan (Kay) Speich, her sister Sally Berends (Brian Olson), and numerous nieces and nephews who cherished her.
Born in Stillwater, Minnesota, October 16th, 1957, Mary lived in Bayport before moving into group homes. Since 2005 she resided in New Hope, where she formed strong bonds with housemates Marilyn, Mary, and Amy, and with caregivers-especially Karen, her home supervisor. Together they enjoyed shopping, movies, and fishing on Mille Lacs Lake, among other activities.
Mary treasured weekend and holiday visits with family and outings to the cabin on Rush and Mille Lacs lakes. She participated in the Special Olympics, competing in shot put and softball throw, and worked through the Kaposia, Inc work program at the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis.
Mary's sense of humor brought joy to those who knew her. She often mimicked others' remarks, prompting her hearty laugh and the playful, "You're funny." She usually closed conversations with a warm, "See you tomorrow."
We extend heartfelt gratitude to REM Hennepin, a Sevita partner, for their ongoing support and compassionate care, and to St. Croix Hospice for their guidance during the final month. We will always remember and appreciate the kindness and dedication they showed our family.
Please consider donating to Special Olympics Minnesota or Go Fishing MN in lieu of flowers or memorials. Both organizations support individuals with special needs and help provide inclusive programs and opportunities.
