Meer Nyimulu Gilo was born on January 1, 1989, in Gog, Gambela, Ethiopia, the eldest son of Ariet Bam Cham and Nyimulu Gilo.

Meer's early life was marked by profound loss and resilience. Following the premature death of his father, he was raised by his mother alongside his four siblings. In December 2003, Meer survived the Gambela genocide in Ethiopia. In early 2004, at approximately 14 years old, he and his uncle Okalaka Cham fled Ethiopia, undertaking a treacherous journey through Sudan, now South Sudan. By late 2004, they sought asylum in Kenya.

Meer and his uncle lived for over a decade as refugees in Ifo Refugee Camp in Kenya. In late 2015, Meer was resettled in the United States. He endured separation from his mother and siblings for over two decades.

On May 30, 2026, Meer was involved in a pickup truck accident in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was admitted to Regions Hospital, where he remained in a coma for 13 days. Meer passed away on June 12, 2026 at Regions Hospital St Paul MN. He died alongside his family Okalaka Cham, Abang Gowi Obang Okello, Okello Obang, Akom Lero, Loch Othow, Luup Omot, Nine Odolla Didumo Alamo, and Martha Omot.

Throughout his life, Meer was esteemed for his kindness, humor, and affection toward everyone. He lived a life that embodied the meaning of his name.

Meer's passing will be deeply felt by his family and by all who knew him in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Minnesota, USA.
