Nicholas "Nick" Vander Vegte

Nicholas Richard Vander Vegte was born in Pella, Iowa on September 1, 1972 to Stanley and Bonnie Vander Vegte, and passed away December 3, 2025 surrounded by his loving family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Amy Hays, mother Bonnie Vander Vegte, brother Stuart Vander Vegte (Sarah Rohret), and sister Emily Chute (Christopher Chute), along with many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins, and many close friends he considered family.

Nick graduated from Stillwater Area High School in 1991. He spent time and made many wonderful memories in Duluth and the east metro before meeting Amy in 2018 and eventually residing in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They were wed on November 21, 2025. He was a light to many and enjoyed volunteering his time. Over the years, he gave of his time to Surly Gives a Damn, Hearts and Hammers, Veterans Home, and Grace Hospice. He ended his career at Gateway Unlimited Living as a positive support specialist for adults with disabilities.

Nick’s superpower was to make you feel like you were going to be friends forever. He always had a smile and the right words to say. He had an amazing sense of humor that livened up a room and put people at ease. Even in the end, his servant heart wanted to make sure everyone was going to be ok. Nick enjoyed cooking and trying the newest restaurants, was an avid golfer, loved fishing, and valued hanging out with friends and family.

Nicholas was preceded in death by father Stanley Vander Vegte, grandparents Richard and Helen Van Wyk, grandparents Edward and Elvina Vander Vegte, uncle Don Vander Vegte, aunt Phyllis Vande Griend, uncle Rod Vande Griend, uncle Walt De Blauw, and uncle Leroy Schwarz.

The family will be at the church greeting people at 1 pm with the service following at 1:30 at the First Presbyterian Church on at 6201 Osgood Ave N, Stillwater, MN 55082.
