Ranlet Miner, Jr.

Ran Miner passed peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, May 1, 2025.

Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Ran attended high school at St. Mark’s School in Southborough, Massachusetts, followed by Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. After graduating in 1958, Ran enlisted in the Marine Corps, becoming a Platoon Commander with the 6th Marine Regiment, where he served until 1962.

While in the Marines, Ran married his hometown sweetheart, Beth Kidd. Ran and Beth were married for 60 years (Beth died in 2020 from complications of Alzheimer’s). [Beth's Obit] Ran and Beth chose to make their life together in Minnesota, where he taught at St. Paul Academy, remaining on the faculty for 39 years. Ran taught history and government and later served as SPA’s admissions director and college counselor.

Ran retired in 2000, spending time supporting lifelong interests in education and the environment, such as St. Mark’s School, St. Paul Academy, Eco Education, and YMCA Camp Widjiwagan. Ran often commented on the importance to him of his board work for The Nature Conservancy, National Eagle Center, Widji, and North Haven Conservation Partners.

Ran and Beth‘s home in Hugo, MN, was the family’s gathering place for holidays and all special occasions. They made sure that everyone felt welcome around the Hugo dining table. Their second home in North Haven, Maine, created lifelong memories for anybody lucky enough to visit. Ran and Beth delighted in the interests of their children and grandchildren, whether that involved horse shows, cross-country ski races, dance, theatre, music recitals, or other school activities. They were enthusiastic cheerleaders for every family member.

Ran was preceded in death by his wife, Beth Miner; parents, Ranlet Miner and Anne Oviatt; his stepparents, Diana Miner and Bud Oviatt; his sister, Anne Richardson and brother-in-law, Brad Richardson.

Ran is survived by his half-brother Dana Oviatt (Carol), children, Tim Miner (Ellen Montgomery) and Elzabeth Lampert, and grandchildren Seth and Steven Miner and Zoe and Ivy Lampert, and beloved corgi Annie.

A special thank you to Jill McDowell, whose care and compassion allowed Ran to remain in the home he loved and also resulted in two amazing trips to North Haven.

Memorials in Ran’s honor to educational and environmental charities are appreciated.

Ran and Beth will remain forever together in the hearts of their family and many friends. A celebration of life for both Ran and Beth will take place on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, from 1-4 pm, with remembrances from the family and others at 2 pm, at Bradshaw Celebration of Life Center, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd, Stillwater, MN 55082.
