Richard Michael Kiewel

Richard "Rick" Michael Kiewel, 75, passed away surrounded by his family. He came into this world on New Year's Day as the first baby born that year in Mankato, MN. Rick grew up mostly in Mahtomedi, where he graduated from high school. He lived a full life built on curiosity, craftsmanship, and connection, and he loved a good deal!

Rick had a natural mechanical mind; there was nothing he couldn't build or fix. Over the years, he built remote-controlled planes and boats, along with rockets and bikes, always finding joy in figuring out how things worked and bringing his ideas to life. His love of creating things also made him a wonderful cook. He loved making bread and could whip up a snack or meal in minutes with whatever was in the fridge!

Rick was just as gifted with people. He always had a story to share and was the kind of person who could strike up a conversation with anyone.

Some of Rick's happiest days were spent sailing on Lake Superior and relaxing at the camper with his wife, Lisa, and their beloved dogs. He loved all animals, even the less popular ones like bearded dragons, lizards, snakes, and tarantulas.

Rick is survived by his wife, Lisa; his three children, Heidi (David) and their son, Eirik; Kathy (Nate) and their son, Finley; and Kevin; and his sister, Joan.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Gordon and Bill (George William), and his parents, Fred (George Frederic) and Elberta.
In place of flowers, the family asks that you plant a tree in Rick's memory, a fitting tribute to a man who loved growing things and leaving the world a little greener. Don't forget to give it a name in true Rick fashion!

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, August 27th, 2026, from 3:00-5:00 pm at Bradshaw in Stillwater, MN.
