Richard Dean Swale

Richard Dean Swale, age 76, passed away peacefully at his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Born in West Union, Iowa, on March 31, 1950, to Charles and W. Lucille Swale, Richard was a creative force from his earliest days. He pursued his passion for artistic expression at the University of Northern Iowa, earning his bachelor's degree in 1972 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1974.

A gifted photographer, draftsman, and sculptor, Richard immersed himself in the counterculture movement that shaped his generation. His artwork reflected the unconventional and progressive spirit of the era, serving as a bold and thoughtful exploration of the social and cultural transformations of the time. Through his creative work, he captured a unique perspective that remained distinctly his own.

Richard was a quiet and kind man, deeply comfortable in the company of his thoughts, his books, and his creations. Beneath his reserved exterior lived a sharp intellect, a dry wit, and a brilliant sense of humor that friends and acquaintances will fondly remember. He was a devoted fan of comedy and was known for possessing a collection of Groucho Marx books that seemed almost impossible to rival.

Beyond his visual art, Richard's greatest lifelong passion was music. For decades, he carefully built and preserved an extraordinary collection, driven by a deep curiosity and appreciation for artists who traveled their own paths. He was a passionate advocate for underground and fringe musicians, particularly Frank Zappa and Tom Waits, whose work he admired and eagerly shared with others. Jazz also served as a lifelong companion and source of inspiration.

Richard found great joy in sharing what he loved. Whether discussing music for hours, lending records, passing along books and articles, or introducing others to artists they might never have otherwise discovered, he delighted in expanding horizons and fostering appreciation for the arts. His generosity, enthusiasm, and depth of knowledge enriched the lives of many and left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and W. Lucille Swale; his brothers, Robert and Roland; and his sister, Charlan.

He is survived by several loving nieces and a nephew, along with many friends whose lives were touched by his creativity, kindness, humor, and generous spirit.

A graveside memorial service will take place this fall in West Union, Iowa.

Richard's legacy lives on through his art, his music, and the countless conversations, discoveries, and moments of inspiration he shared with others throughout his life. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
