Shirley Ray (Olhausen) Whitlock, born June 23, 1931, in Hartley, Iowa, grew up surrounded by open fields, the Little Sioux River, and a lively family. A proud tomboy, she rode horses, climbed trees, skated on frozen canals, and learned life lessons from her parents and beloved Grandma Voss: everyone is equal and the rules matter.
At 18, determined to live boldly, she bought a $50 convertible and drove to Hollywood, working as a lab tech, briefly as a cigarette girl, and then as a Northwest Airlines stewardess flying Stratocruisers to Honolulu and Cuba. Curious and fearless, she created her own path long before many women were encouraged to do so.
After a sun-soaked courtship spent boating on the St. Croix River, Shirley married the love of her life, Bill Whitlock. She quickly began her greatest adventure: motherhood. Together they raised five children in a home full of fun, purpose, and community. In 1966 they helped create Wildwood in Hayward, WI-an idyllic summer haven Shirley called their best decision.
To her 11 grandchildren, she was "Bacha," their Maria von Trapp, teaching adventure, joy, Pinochle, golf swings, and jam-making. She drove water-ski boats, orchestrated treasure-hunt vacations, and filled every holiday with unforgettable traditions. Her parties-Christmas sleigh rides, Valentine sock hops, solstice feasts-were legendary.
Shirley taught by example: courage, kindness, steadiness, and independence woven into everyday moments. She is survived by her five children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter, and all who were lucky enough to be loved by her.
Shirley is survived by her five children Anne (Michael), Bill (Serena), Justin (Stephanie), Jane (Eric), Tom (Mary); her 11 grandchildren Kieran (Melissa), Oliver (Erin), Sophia, Ethan, Sam, Nico, Adriana, Caleb, Reece, Ray and Joe; and her great granddaughter Aura Moon.
Her legacy is love, laughter, generosity, and endless adventure.
