Steven Mark Spencer, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, unexpectedly passed away on April 10, 2026.
Steve was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, while his parents were serving in the military. After returning to Maine, his family settled in Nashua, New Hampshire, where he discovered his lifelong love of sports. He played on teams across all seasons, driven by a competitive spirit and a commitment to excellence. That dedication-practice, improvement, and the pursuit of doing things well, became a defining thread throughout his life. He brought the same focus to his work, his friendships, and especially his care for family, friends, and neighbors.
Steve was serious-minded and thoughtful. He listened first, spoke with intention, and made decisions carefully. His humor and kindness drew people in, and he is remembered through countless stories of adventures with friends from Peele Road, Nashua High, Grateful Dead Shows, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Chi Phi, St Thomas University, Afton Alps Ski & Snowboard School and PSIA Events, stories he loved to tell and retell.
In Minnesota, Steve began a long engineering career starting at SciMed. He continued with Boston Scientific as a Director of R&D until 2016, later at Teleflex and Poly Medicure Ltd. In recent years, he intentionally slowed his professional pace to be more present at home, attending every game, concert, and school event; cooking dinner and serving on the St. Paul High School Boosters Club board and the Grace Episcopal Church Usher Committee.
Skiing was one of Steve's greatest passions. He was known for his technical abilities and for his legendary dad jokes among the ARC student racers and cherished the camaraderie of the instructor community.
Music and art, though quieter parts of his life, were deeply meaningful to him. Steve was remarkably talented, whether singing, playing guitar, or drawing. though he was always too humble to say so. He found space for creativity even in the busiest seasons.
Steve was Karin's loyal confidant and the proud father of Lydia and Samuel, who brought him joy every day. He would and could do anything: swaddle a newborn, tune skis, prep bikes, fix a boat motor, tie a lure, explain chemistry/physics (PV = nRT), start a fire, cook a great dinner, cheer loudly from the bleachers, or offer comfort that made everything steady and grounded.
Steve is preceded in death by his son Owen Birk; father Darrell Spencer; uncle Dale Spencer; brother‑in‑law Robert Jordan; and grandparents Marilyn and Linwood Bowers, and Kathleen and Clayton Spencer and father in-law Jerry Kruger. He was devoted to his family across generations, carrying forward their shared love of the outdoors, especialy skiing in Summit County with cousins Jeff and Christy, and fishing at Lake Nicatous in Maine with the Spencer Clan.
He is survived by his wife, Karin Spencer, and their children, Lydia and Samuel Spencer; his mother, Beverly Spencer; brother, Scott Spencer (Karen LeMire); sister, Karen Jordan; aunt Patricia Spencer, nieces (Melissa and Blake), nephew (Clay), many Bowers aunts, uncles and cousins.
