Dean Bircher

January 27, 2023

Obituary

Dean Bircher, 89, passed peacefully on January 27, 2023, being overcome by prostate cancer and Lewy Body Dementia. He was born in South Dakota, grew up in Alexandria, MN, most recently residing in the Sandstone/Hinckley area.

Dean served in the United States Army and saw combat in the Korean War.

He wasn’t shy to criticize your cooking, driving, or your views on just about anything. He was openly opinionated on most any subject. He liked to dine out, mostly at locally owned cafes where he was always flirtatious with the waitresses. He loved his grandchildren and would do anything in his power to support their endeavors, especially when it came to sports. Dean was a stand-out athlete in high school. His athletic focus extended to running track through his days in the army. His passion toward athletics, track and field in particular, would often find him at local track meets. Dean was quick to help a neighbor, friend, or family member if needed. He truly had a compassionate soul.

Dean loved the outdoors. Snowmobiling cars, and guns mostly. He spent endless hours just tinkering around in the garage. He was an avid machinist and a meticulous mechanic and craftsman. He became a benchrest rifle marksman and champion across the Midwest. He built many competition rifles for himself and other competitors.

Survived by his children: Ronald, Randall (Barb), Shelley (Dan) Berquist. Grandchildren: James (Katie), Eleanor (Kyle) Thibodeau, Abigail (Jake) Thompson, the Berube’s: Alea, Ethan, Erika, and Ella.

7 Great-Grandchildren.

Siblings: James (Judy), Pauline Rutten. Special friend: Joan Anderson.

Preceded in death by his parents: Carlos and Velda, brother Robert.
