Earl S. Lipman, M.D.

Earl Lipman, who spent 90 years of his life in Rochester,
New York, passed away in Stillwater, Minnesota at the
age of 96.
Earl was a graduate of Monroe High School, the
University of Rochester and the New York University
School of Medicine. He completed medical residencies
with Genesee Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital in New
York City.

Earl’s love of learning, teaching and medicine were evident to everyone who ever
met him. His earliest mentors in the medical profession recruited him to serve as
the first-ever Director of Medical Education for the Rochester General Hospital.
Between 1965 and 1974, Earl continued his service to the General Hospital as its
Associate Chief of Medicine.
The University of Rochester School of Medicine was so eager to bring Earl’s
diagnostic insights into the classroom that it awarded him one of the very first
Lawrence A. Kohn Senior Teaching Fellowships. Then, as today, the Kohn
Fellowships bring experienced clinicians to the Medical School to share what they
know with the next generation of physicians. Years later, when Earl shuttered his
private practice — or as he phrased it, “surrendered in the war of insurances” —
he went back to the lecture halls of the Medical School. In retirement, Earl
delighted in teaching new students as an Emeritus Clinical Professor of Medicine.
Earl was a longtime member of the state and county medical societies, the
American Heart Association and the Rochester Academy of Medicine. In 2005,
the Academy recognized him with its Award of Merit.
Earl was completely devoted to his wife of 66 years, Jane. From the days
of their courtship in New York, he regarded his time with her as his greatest bit of
good fortune — a lifetime together for which he was lucky to be chosen.
Earl was preceded in death by Jane and his brother Howard. He is survived

by his sons John and Eric; his daughters-in-laws Jayne and Kimberly; six grand-
children, Deborah, Meredith, Jonathan, Jennifer, Noah and Samuel; and thousands of grateful patients, colleagues, students and friends.
